Missy Shanks

On May 9th, 2017 I went to have my mammogram. It ended up being six mammograms and on the same day I had 3 biopsies taken. On May 11th, I met with a doctor at Gundersen Lutheran in LaCrosse, WI. They confirmed I had Stage 3 breast cancer. From there I had chemotherapy for the next few months. I had a double mastectomy on Oct 12th, 2017. After healing from surgery I started radiation treatments. I got to ring the Bell on January 10th, 2018 confirming I was Cancer-FREE! Till this day I am still cancer-FREE. I am staying positive and maintaining a positive outlook on life, which is what made it easier to get through this journey I’ve been on.

Be aware of programs provided through Winneshiek County Celebration of Life to those individuals needing mammograms or assistance while in active cancer treatment.

The greatest motivation through this experience was support from family, friends and especially my daughter.
